Limitations of 911 Calling over VoIP Circuits

netVOICE cares about your safety and we want to make sure you are fully informed about dialing 911 with your netVOICE service - it's different.

It is important to understand that there are some critical differences between your Alternative 911 service with netVOICE and 911 service with traditional phone service. There are certain circumstances in which you will not be able to use Alternative 911 service, including but not limited to the following.

You will NOT be able to reach 911 IF:

  • Your Internet connection connection is not working
  • Your electrical power is out

In addition, unlike traditional E-911 service, when you dial 911, you will need to provide the emergency operator with your name, address and telephone number or the dispatcher may not be able to locate you. If your call is unexpectedly disconnected, the emergency operator may not know your telephone number and thus may not be able to call you back and also may not know where to send police or emergency personnel.

Do not hang up unless told directly to do so and if disconnected, you should dial 911 again.

In accordance with netVOICE communications' standard Terms and Conditions, service is only provided to customers who have, and agree to maintain, alternate means of contacting 911 (using a cell phone or other traditional telephone service such as a fax line).

You should be aware that 911 emergency calls that are made using netVOICE's service will take longer to be connected to the correct 911 response centre than calls made using a traditional landline telephone.

If you make a remote netVOICE 911 emergency call from outside Canada or from a location within Canada that is not served by 911 the operator will not be able to complete your 911 call. In particular, if you are using netVOICE services over a VSAT satellite link, 911 calling may not be available at all.

For these reasons, it is advisable to use a traditional landline telephone for 911 emergency calls whenever possible.

netVOICE will not be responsible or liable for any damages, costs, claims, losses or expenses (including, without limitation, any indirect, special, consequential, incidental, economic or punitive damages) that arise from, or are due to, any omissions, interruptions, delays, errors or defects in transmission of any 911 emergency call that is made using netVOICE's service.

You must inform your staff, guests, and other persons who may be present at the physical location where you utilize the netVOICE service, of the important differences in and limitations of VoIP 911 Dialing service as compared with E911 service, as set out above. You must also inform them of the alternate 911 calling method that is available (i.e. by cell or by using the fax line phone).

If you would like stickers to attach to your phones warning of the limitations associated with 911 calling, please contact netVOICE communications. We strongly recommend you obtain these stickers and place them on your netVOICE phones in order to caution your staff and visitors of the limitations associated with 911 calling with netVOICE services.

Please do not hesitate to contact netVOICE communications should you have any questions about the limitations of 911 calling or require additional 911 warning stickers for your phones.

PLEASE do not place test 911 calls without coordinating with netVOICE communications in advance. Such test calls can disrupt actual emergency calls and also will cause netVOICE Network Operations Staff to be notified.

There will be a $50 fee charged to any client who places an unscheduled non-emergency 911 call.
