NetVOICE Communications Announces IP-Centrex.ca -- Internet Telephone Service for Small- and Medium-Sized Businesses

VANCOUVER, BC, 1 June 2004 -- NetVOICE Communications announces that it has launched IP-Centrex.ca, the first IP Centrex service available in Vancouver tailored to the needs of Small- and Medium-sized Businesses (SMBs).

IP Centrex is a new technology that delivers advanced telephone features over the Internet. Previously, businesses that needed these features either had to purchase and install their own Private Branch Exchange (PBX) equipment, or had to obtain these services from their telephone company.

IP Centres provides a third option that reduces the costs and increases the availability and features. Most significantly, using Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology frees Centrex geographically. With IP Centrex, extensions can be located anywhere, not just within one building or one city. With IP Centrex, calls between branch offices are free, regardless of how far apart they may be located. Travelling staff can even take their IP-Centrex.ca phone with them and make calls from their hotel room as if they were still in their office.

The major telephone companies have offered IP Centrex services to their largest customers for a couple of years. Other telephone companies offer VoIP services but are aimed primarily at the residential user and do not have many of the features of IP-Centrex.ca that SMBs need.

Moreover, there isn't the wait for installation many are now experiencing.

IP-Centrex.ca fills the gap between these existing offerings: those of the major telcos that are out of reach of SMBs, and those aimed at residential customers that lack the needed business features.

Some of the features available with IP-Centrex.ca include:

  • automated attendant ("Thank you for calling ACME, press one for sales...")
  • call queuing ("Sorry but all staff are busy handling other customers, please wait....")
  • direct inward dialling (each staff member can have his own direct dial number)
  • abbreviated dialling (reach any staff member by dialling a three-digit extension)
  • rotary/overline service (multiple calls to same corporate number accepted without busy signal)
  • free intra-company long distance calling
  • call transfer
  • call conferencing
  • call parking
  • voice mail with paging and email notification
  • geographical independence (office extensions can be located anywhere -- at home, at a hotel while travelling, at a branch office across town or across the country)

Because IP-Centrex.ca is delivered over the customer's existing broadband Internet access, there is no additional wiring to be connected to deliver the service. This means that new service can be delivered in a matter of hours, not days or weeks. For new companies starting up, or projects (such as political campaigns) requiring new telephone service quickly, this can eliminate a major critical-path delay.

IP-Centrex.ca differs from other apparently similar offerings in several ways:

  • IP-Centrex.ca can provide a number of business features not available from other VoIP suppliers including rotary/overline service, call queuing, and automated attendant;
  • IP-Centrex.ca will work with any IP phone or softphone that complies with the popular SIP standard -- you are not tied to special hardware only available from the service provider;
  • IP-Centrex.ca can be integrated with a company's existing PBX allowing organisations with an existing PBX to enjoy many of the benefits of IP-Centrex.ca without having to replace their existing telephone equipment.

Pricing varies depending on number of extensions, duration of contract, and special features but typically ranges from $29.95/month to $49.95/month per extension.
